Review: Sacro Wedgy for Scoliosis and SI Joint Pain

The Sacro Wedgy is a helpful tool for reducing lower back and sacrum pain from scoliosis and sacroiliac (SI) joint disfunction.

Following the birth of my second child, I had SI joint pain. My pelvis was misaligned and hormones made my joints looser. My pelvic floor yoga therapist, Penny Fleming, recommended the Sacro Wedgy to help release the area and reduce pain. Please note that the manufacturer recommends not using the Sacro Wedgy during pregnancy and waiting three days postpartum before using it.

Here’s How It Went…

I bought the female version (currently $33.95), though I have a long torso. The Sacro Wedgy website mentions that if you have a long torso, you may need the male version. My short stature still allowed the female one to fit.

When I first received it, I was in regular pain and unable to lay on it with the elevation pad. But as soon as I laid on it, I could feel the release of my muscles in the back and front of my pelvis. I had immediate relief. The wedge fit around my sacrum well with a little of adjustment. It seems durable and supportive.

I used it one to two times a day for about a week and my pain was gone. In addition to using the Sacro Wedgy, I was also doing yoga and core strengthening exercises. In those exercises I was focusing on alignment in my pelvis.

When you have scoliosis (particularly with lumbar curves) or a leg length discrepancy (LLD), your pelvis can often get misaligned. When you have a structural issue, like scoliosis or LLD, the problem isn’t necessarily going to be fixed by anything—even the Sacro Wedgy. The structure of your bones isn’t quickly changed. (How they can be changed is a topic for another day.) However, the Sacro Wedgy can help release your pelvic muscles and ligaments, which can be tight or imbalanced between sides. My hips were often highly imbalanced. When laying on my back, one hip was higher (closer to the ceiling) in addition to one hip being closer to my head because that leg is longer. This means that I had some pelvic torsion and my pelvic bones were out of alignment. A portion of this may not be able to be changed, due to structural differences, but I did find more alignment and evenness with the Sacro Wedgy and pelvic floor yoga and exercises.

I didn’t buy their companion neck support but used a rolled-up towel to rest my neck on. Now that I love the Sacro Wedgy, I am considering getting the neck support as well.

I still haven’t used the additional foam lift that goes under the wedge piece…my children ran off with it and I don’t know where it is. I also haven’t used it while sitting. I need to dedicate a little time to sitting on it for long periods of time. When I have tried it, I sat on it for only a couple minutes and I felt a little uncomfortable—maybe a sign that I should be using it. I may not be used to the alignment it is trying to introduce.

My Conclusions

The Sacro Wedgy is a great product and even with structural differences in my legs and from scoliosis, I had reduced pain and improved alignment. However, I haven’t had benefits from the additional foam lift or from sitting on it because initially when using it in those ways, I wasn’t comfortable. But now that I am a little more aligned, I should try it again.
